Summer time end date changed in Chile

The current energy crisis, caused by a drought, is affecting the economy in Chile. The Chilean government has announced new dates for this year's daylight saving time.^[1]

End of daylight saving time in 2011

On the mainland and in Chilean Antarctica, the new end date is 7 May 2011, the first Saturday of May. The clocks go back from 24:00 to 23:00 the same day.^[2][3]

On Easter Island and Salas y Gómez Island, the new end date is the same as on the mainland, 7 May 2011. The clocks go back from 22:00 to 21:00 the same day.^[3]

Start of daylight saving time in 2011

On the mainland and in Chilean Antarctica, the new start date is 20 August 2011, the third Saturday of August. The clocks go forward from 24:00 to 01:00 the next day.^[2][3]

On Easter Island and Salas y Gómez Island, the new start date is also 20 August 2011. The clocks go forward from 22:00 to 23:00 the same day.^[3]

Update, 26 October 2026: The new dates held, but Chile's dates kept changing for years.^[3] Chile now changes its clocks at midnight on the first Saturday of April (back) and the first Saturday of September (forward), and Easter Island at 10 pm the same evening;^[3][4] the southern regions of Magallanes (since 2017) and Aysén (since 2025) keep UTC-3 all year.^[4][5] See also: Chile extends daylight saving time to April 28, 2012.
